How to properly feed your dogs

Many people believe since their dogs have such a good appetite that they are always hungry but the truth is dogs are different from people when it comes to eating. You may be used to eating 3 times a day plus snacking whenever but people have a better indicator when it is time to stop eating. Follow these steps on how to properly feed your dogs.

  1. Measure out their food.

The best practice to make sure your dog gets enough to eat and maintains a healthy weight is to read the instructions on the bag on their food. Each food has different levels of nutrients and they will display the ideal amount of food on the bag based on your dog’s weight.

  1. Feed them twice a day

Make sure to read the bag carefully. If it says DAILY recommended amount then divide that number by 2 and feed your dog that amount in the morning and in the evening.

A very common misconception is to fill your dog’s bowl to the brim and leave it out. There are many reasons why this is not ideal. Dogs will eat as much as they can stomach and will often, eat more than a healthy diet. Also you run the risk of the food spoiling, bugs getting into it, and the food getting stale causing you to have to throw it away.

  1. Don’t give them people food.

When you give your dog food from the table it causes a significant amount of issues. They will be far less likely to eat their food. It will enable them to beg for food whenever you are eating. It is bad for their health and in extreme cases can cause obesity. If you do decide to offer your dog some food prep it separately with no seasoning and make sure it is okay for them to eat it and only give it to them in their dog bowl during feeding time.

  1. No excessive treats

We’re pretty sure you want your dog to feel loved all the time because they make you feel loved by them every second. If you are looking to reward good behavior you don’t need to do it by giving them a treat every time. Instead you can give them praise, give them pets or verbally telling them they did a good job. Giving them a treat every now and then is fine but giving them too many can quickly add up.
